Essential road maintenance to begin in Kinson, Bournemouth

Posted on Friday 6th April 2018
Planned highway maintenance works on one of Bournemouth’s key strategic roads are set to get underway on March 5.

The Council will be carrying out resurfacing works on Wimborne Rd in Kinson (between the Tesco/Millhams Rd roundabout and Ferncroft Rd) as part of its annual maintenance programme. The works, involving the relaying of recycled road materials, are expected to take six weeks to complete.

The works will be undertaken in two phases – Phase 1 between Ferncroft Rd and the Conservative Club, and Phase 2 between the Conservative Club and Millhams Rd Roundabout outside of Tesco. During the works, Wimborne Rd will be fully closed in the westbound direction with signed diversions in place for both local and commercial traffic. Electronic road signs are now in place at key locations to provide advanced notice of these works.

Gary Powell, Head of Traffic, Engineering & Major Projects said: “Planned maintenance works on this busy route are essential to ensure that the road network is kept in good condition for all road users. Whilst we have endeavoured to minimise the time that the works will take to complete, by the use of recycled road materials, unfortunately there will still be some disruption to travel. I would ask for road users to follow the signed diversion routes as appropriate and to considering planning ahead at this time if possible.”

Additional notes - road information

Wimborne Road (Northbourne) is one of the busiest routes across the town. Road condition surveys indicate the need for planned resurfacing as a means of a cost effective intervention to prevent more major road failure occurring.

Vehicles over 7.5t travelling Westbound will be required to be diverted via New Rd / Parley Cross. Local Traffic will be diverted via Northbourne Avenue to Kinson Road. Parking will be suspended on Wimborne Rd during the works. Local access will be available from Northbourne Roundabout to Ashridge Avenue.

During Phase 1, The Broadway/East Howe Lane traffic signalised junction will be turned off and this junction will be closed to vehicles entering or exiting from The Broadway or East Howe Lane. Diversions will be signed for these closures.

During Phase 2, Horsham Avenue will be closed at its junction with Wimborne Rd. A diversion route will be signposted.

Kinson Grove will be closed at its eastern end during phase 1 and its western end during phase 2. Access will be available from the other end at all times. Signage will be in place to make this clear.

Access will be maintained via diversion routes to Kitscroft Rd, Graycot Close and the Conservative Club at all times. Traffic will be controlled whilst this arrangement is in place.

Bus services travelling Eastbound will run as normal, subject to some stop closures or relocation. Westbound services will be following a diversion route. Information regarding the changes to local buses will be displayed at the affected stops and available through the various operators please refer to: Yellow Buses www.bybus.co.uk or 01202 636110 and More Buses www.wdbus.co.uk or 0845 0727093.
